Liddle argues for new social Europe

Now is the time for Gordon Brown to restate Labour's commitment to a social Europe argues former Blair adviser, Roger Liddle in a new Freethinking essay. If the EU is to be economically successful, politically sustainable and gain the legitimacy to be effective in the wider world, there must be a renewed focus on Europe's social mission.

Liddle argues that European member states face common social challenges that demand an effective response from the EU. But facing rising tides of Left and Right populism across Europe, it is unable to meet the challenge of shaping globalisation with social justice.

Brown needs new vision to win election

Labour will lose the next election if it offers "more of the same", warns the head of the Fabian Society, Sunder Katwala.

"A bolder Labour vision is now a matter of strategic necessity, not just centre-left desire, says Fabian General Secretary Sunder Katwala, in a new paper The Vision Thing: Why Labour Can't Win Without a Progressive Agenda, launched at a Not the General Election night debate in Westminster.

Parties must change to win members

Political parties are not a thing of the past, but must reengage with voters by offering a more campaigning vision and more ways to get involved, says a new Fabian pamphlet.

In the latest Fabian Ideas pamphlet Facing Out, the authors argue that the Labour Party, under new leadership, has a chance to take stock of the future organisational challenges it faces. The central question must be how Labour can remain at the forefront of campaigning for, and achieving, progressive social change. This will demand major changes in how the Party thinks, organises and acts.

Ed Miliband reveals manifesto strategy

Cabinet Office Secretary Ed Miliband promises he will involve parliamentary colleagues and the wider Labour movement in drawing up the next manifesto, he tells Hannah Jameson. Care and mental health look like being far more prominent on the political agenda as well as youth services. Miliband sees youth services as 'the progressive answer to a lot of the problems that we face in our society', linking together the twin concerns of opportunity for young people and the strength of community.
