The Fabian Society's Environmental Policy Network brings together political, policy, business, civil society and academic participants to discuss key themes in environmental politics and policy.
The network has existed since 2000, and the Fabian Society's work in this area has analysed and helped to inform the marked shift in priority given to environmental issues over this period. The 2010 programme has already included contributions from former Minister for Rural Affairs and Environment, Dan Norris MP on how public attitudes to sustainable consumption can inform policy and campaigns. The latest network event took place on Monday 19th July with David Kennedy, Chief Executive of the government's Climate Change Council, who questioned whether existing markets have the capacity to mobilize capital at the pace required to avoid dangerous climate change and invest in a sustainable future. There is a report available here, evaluating this latest policy network event.
2010-11 Programme Seminar 1: Tuesday 9th March Is a low carbon economy an achievable aim and if so, could innovation and green technology be linked to an economic recovery? The latest seminar in the Fabian Next Capitalism series attempted to discover how a low carbon future fits in with the renewal of capitalism and what government’s role should be. The session was joined by Lord Hunt, the Minister of State for Energy and Climate Change, Professor Jim Skea, Research Director of the UK Energy Research Centre, and Martin Orill, Head of Energy Technology and Innovation at British Gas. The seminar at the Work Foundation was chaired by Tim Horton, Research Director at the Fabian Society.
Seminar 2: Monday 19th July 2010 Green Technology: Investing in our future To achieve the kind of technological advancement needed to meet our 2050 low carbon pledges, there needs to be major changes to the pattern of investment and financial flows currently experienced. This seminar aimed to suggest ways that the Coalition Government could overcome challenges, particularly in a time of fiscal tightening. The seminar was joined by Adrian Gault, Chief Economist, Council for Climate Change, Steve Radley, Director of Policy and External Affairs, and Roger Liddle of Policy Network. Read the report here
