"Single Sex Schools are Anti-Feminist"

Life isn't single-sex. At some point we're going to have to learn to deal with the opposite sex, and we should start to do that in schools, says author Ellie Levenson in a new Fabian Society podcast.

In the podcast author Ellie Levenson tells Kiri Kankhwende why she considers single-sex schools anti-feminist, and why same-sex education may give young girls the edge in school but then hamper their progress in the boardroom. And all-boys schools, she argues, teach boys a misguided idea of what it is to be a man. Listen to the interview in the podcast below.

She argues: "Ask most young women whether they are feminists, and while some will give you a definite yes or no answer, many will hesitate and then utter the words, "I'm not a feminist, but...". When pressed, the same women will often state unequivocally that they are in favour of things like equal pay between men and women, the right to choose whether to work or be a stay-at-home mum and an equal division of labour in the home - fundamental feminist ideals. So why do so many women dread the feminist label?"

The Noughtie Girl's Guide to Feminism author Ellie Levenson explores this question, as well as introducing other "Noughtie Girls" to the issues that feminism cares about and that affect the lives of women today - and men, too. Levenson's style is deliberately conversational and accessible, aimed at debunking feminist myths and encouraging women to think again about how feminism matters in their everyday lives and choices.

The book is not without its detractors, and Levenson addresses some of the criticisms in the Fabian Society podcast, as well as explaining what inspired her to write the book and what she thinks is the way forward for feminism today. Click below to listen to the interview.
