The Fabian Society ran a series of fringe events at the recent Liberal Democrat Party Conference . In a series of public and invite-only round table events, panels explored issues including poverty, prison reform and greening the economy.

Saturday 18th September

12.45 – 14.00: Inside Out: should there be fewer people in prison?
Room 11A,  AAC Hall, Liverpool 

With Lord McNally (Minister of State for Justice), Ben Page (Ipsos MORI), Juliet Lyons (Prison Reform Trust),  Dr Mary Harris (Director of Young Offender Programme led by National Grid) and chaired by Duncan Greenland (CentreForum)

A panel disscussion taking place across all three major party conferences scrutinised the UK’s current approach to prison and examined how new thinking on criminal and social justice could reshape policy and public debate.

20.00 - 21.30: The Poverty Challenge: can the coalition meet the fairness test?

With Tim Horton (Fabian Society) Phillip Blond (ResPublica) and Imran Hussian (CPAG)

A panel debate discussing the extent to which the coalition is delivering on fairness after the first months in Government and if the measures set out by Cameron, Osborne and Clegg can help to reduce inequality and poverty. The Panel will review Labour’s approach to poverty asking where we should make a clean break and where should there be continuity.

With David Lammy MP (Shadow Minister of Higher Education) Norman Lamb MP and chair Micheal White (Political Editor, The Guardian)

A Panel debate that explores why the formation of a progressive coalition failed in 2010 and if hope can still remain for a future progressive partnership between the Liberal Democrats and Labour. What common ground still exists between the two parties and can the distrust that has inevitably arisen from the Liberal Democrats joining the Conservatives be overcome in the future?

Jumpstarting Green Jobs
